DST vs PES vs EMB: Embroidery File Formats Explained

Confused about embroidery file formats? We explain the difference between DST, PES, EMB, JEF, VP3, and every other format โ€” and which one your machine actually needs.

Every embroidery machine reads stitch files, but not every machine reads the same file. If you've ever received a design that your machine refuses to open โ€” or that opened with the wrong colours โ€” this guide is for you. Here's how the most common formats compare.

Machine Files vs Working Files

There are two kinds of embroidery files:

  • Machine (expanded) files such as DST, PES, JEF, EXP and VP3 contain the actual stitch coordinates your machine follows. They can be edited only in limited ways โ€” scaling them more than about 10โ€“15% distorts density.
  • Working (native) files such as EMB (Wilcom) or other software-specific files keep the objects, stitch types and settings. Digitizers edit these, then export machine files.

That's why a good digitizer keeps your working file: edits are clean and fast. At Accurate Digitizing, edits are free โ€” just ask.

DST โ€” Tajima (the commercial standard)

DST is the most widely supported format in commercial embroidery: Tajima, Barudan, SWF, Happy, Ricoma and most multi-needle machines read it. It stores stitches, jumps, trims and colour changes โ€” but not thread colours. That's why DST files open in "random" colours on screen; you set the needles yourself using the thread chart we include.

PES โ€” Brother and Babylock

PES is used by Brother, Babylock and some Bernina machines. Unlike DST, it stores thread colours and a preview image. PES has many versions; older machines may need an older version โ€” tell us your model and we'll export the right one.

EMB โ€” Wilcom

EMB is Wilcom EmbroideryStudio's working file. Shops that own Wilcom software use it to edit designs, change text and resize properly. It's not normally loaded straight onto a machine.

Can You Convert DST to PES?

Yes, conversion between machine formats is usually safe because the stitches stay the same; you only lose or gain colour information. What you can't do safely is resize a machine file a lot or convert an image straight into a stitch file โ€” see how to convert PNG to DST.

Which Format Should You Ask For?

Ask for the format your machine reads โ€” or simply ask for all of them. Every Accurate Digitizing order includes DST, PES, EMB, EXP, JEF, VP3, HUS and XXX at no extra charge. Send your design and tell us your machine brand.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do my DST colours look wrong?

DST doesn't store thread colours, so software shows default colours. Use the thread colour list supplied with the file.

Which format is best for Brother machines?

PES. Older Brother models may need PEC or an older PES version.

Can I edit a DST file?

Only lightly. For real edits you need the working file (e.g. EMB) โ€” or ask your digitizer, which is free with us.
